Despite technology advancing to unprecedented levels, hospitals are still struggling to properly exchange patient’s data with each other, which locks patient data into proprietary systems, raising hospital’s management costs. The lack of patient data exchange can be attributed to an absence of standardization of data formats, terminology and cybersecurity protocols of electronic health record (EHR) systems; to facilitate patient data exchange, hospitals should adopt secure and harmonized technology platforms such as blockchain networks.
