The Jehovah’s Witnesses are a religious group which has millions of members around the world. Members of this group do not accept blood transfusions because “both the Old and New Testaments clearly command [them] to abstain from blood. (Genesis 9:4; Leviticus 17:10; Deuteronomy 12:23; Acts 15:28, 29) Also, God views blood as representing life. (Leviticus 17:14) So [they] avoid taking blood not only in obedience to God but also out of respect for him as the Giver of life” (Official Website of Jehovah’s Witnesses). This becomes complicated when Jehovah’s Witnesses patients have medical issues that require a blood transfusion in a surgical process or as part of a treatment. When these patients reject a blood transfusion that is vital for helping them or keeping them alive this places a mental and emotional burden on physicians. They have to make the decision if they want to treat this patient knowing that there is a high chance they will not survive and follow their duty to help a patient or decline to help them.
