Drug abuse in America has always been a problem and over the decades it has cost millions of lives. However, you would think that over the years, the government would begin to take stricter measures and new approaches, but their efforts are still relatively stagnant as in 2019 overdose deaths rose by 5% (The Economist). This continues to plague poor socioeconomic communities because this is where the opioid crisis is the worst and it prevents them from being able to advance on several other issues that are holding these communities back. The Covid-19 epidemic has significantly worsened this issue as people are forced to stay home due to remote work or job loss. This has also led to an increase in factors that can cause opioid addiction and abuse which is only worsening the opioid crisis because so much time at home leads to depression, aimless time, anxiety and several other factors.
